This month marked the 100th life drawing session for our crew in London.

We're thrilled to celebrate our 100th life drawing session in London!

Offered to artists and non-artists alike, life drawing sessions have been taking place in our London office since 2023, and have also recently been offered in our Mumbai and Montreal studios too!

Drawing from life helps develop observational skills - as well as being a fun communal activity! - leading to a better understanding of anatomy, pose, light, shadow, and form - all fundamental skills that apply to our work across animation and VFX.

Speaking about the sessions, Andrew Schlussel (Senior Director, Training & Development, DNEG Animation), said:

"You might wonder why we draw with pencil and paper when all of our work is digital. It is one of the best ways to study reality itself - such as anatomy, light, shadow, form, and expression. It's one thing to look at a person, but when you draw them you need to really understand the shapes and perspective in a way that observation alone doesn't provide. Reality is the ultimate source of creativity, so when you're studying reality, you are building a library in your mind that you can pull from when you are coming up with original ideas."

Archie Donato (VFX Supervisor, DNEG Animation) added:

"Life drawing classes have been an incredibly successful addition to the artistic development for our teams. I myself find it a highlight of the week to be able to take a break from work and further grow as an artist. Life drawing classes help me immensely both for my overall development as an artist, but also being able to give more detailed and precise notes to my artists as a VFX Supervisor."
